THURSDAY (3): Compass Rose

Student Handbook:
You will only get a student handbook if you are new to RMS. YEAH!!!! We are saving paper! We do have to go over it today as a refresher so you have an understanding of school rules and expectations.

Map Essentials:
Most students don't understand when I talk about map essentials. If something is essential, it is required. In this case, because we are working with both regular and digital maps we may see different representations of each map essential or it may be missing for a specific reason. As we work through the class we will be analyzing maps to make sure we can trust them.

The first map essential we will discuss is the compass rose. The compass rose gives us direction on a map. It helps us be successful and make sure we are headed in the right direction. Without it we may be come confused and disoriented. Click here to read more about origins of the compass rose.

Throughout history, the compass rose has been represented on maps. Sometimes it is very simple looking, and other times it is very artistic. I love the artistic styles because it captures the attention of people. It draws them to the map.

Each of you will be creating a compass rose, but this will be a unique and personal one that helps people understand who you are and what is important to you. We will refer to it as your life compass. Click here to begin your rough draft.
